At December 31, 2012, Panama’s public sector internal debt represented approximately 24.4% of the total public sector debt. A substantial portion of total public sector internal debt is extended by public sector sources, such as CSS and official banking institutions, and BNP in particular. As of December 31, 2012, Panama’s public sector internal debt totaled approximately $3,482.8 million, an increase of $1,579.0 million from December 31, 2011. This increase was due to the issuance of $1,364.0 of a new domestic bond maturing in 2022, as part of the Market Makers Program. Panama’s public sector internal debt as a percentage of GDP was 9.6% as of December 31, 2012. External Debt As of December 31, 2012, total public sector external debt was approximately $10.8 billion, down from $10.9 billion as of December 31, 2011. Panama’s public sector external debt as a percentage of GDP was 29.7% as of December 31, 2012, as compared to 34.8% as of December 31, 2011. As of March 31, 2013, total public sector external debt was approximately $11.0 billion, up from $10.8 billion as of December 31, 2012. Panama’s public sector external debt as a percentage of GDP was 30.4% as of March 31, 2013, as compared to 29.7% as of December 31, 2012. |
